Why you will never find a card for school attendance in our store...

One card I will never design, and sell is for an attendance award.

I must start with this is not a dig at my children’s school, they are flipping brilliant! and is probably more aimed at those who regulate our schools rather than individual settings.

But…

As a parent of a neurodivergent child, who also has specific dietary requirements I have seen first-hand the upset such awards can bring. Such an ‘achievement’ is completely out of their reach, with multiple appointments each term.

Personally, I just can’t understand why it is such an achievement, to not miss a single day of school. Doesn’t it contradict the constant messages from schools not to send sick children to class, and not to return them too early after illness?

Surely these awards and the desire some children may have to achieve this, are creating an environment where students are encouraged to come to school when they are sick?

I feel they send the message being present is more important than being healthy, which is not a message, in 2023, we should be promoting.

Attendance records can also be unfair to students who have other responsibilities, such as caring for a sick family member or attending a family event, such as a funeral.

Attendance awards are outdated and do not align with the values of inclusivity and equality schools promote.

Instead, we should be focusing on creating an inclusive and equitable environment, where all students can succeed, regardless of their attendance record. Where all students feel valued and supported in their education.

I am not disputing attendance records should not be kept, they absolutely should, and the whereabouts of children should be known. The certificates, the medals, and the trips for 100% attendance are the issues here.

Do you agree?
